Welcome to Stop it Now!

Stop it Now! UK and Ireland is a child sexual abuse prevention campaign. We support adults to play their part in prevention through providing sound information, educating members of the public, training those who work with children and families and running our freephone confidential Helpline.

Our Helpline is available to:

  • adults worried about the behaviour of other adults or children and young people
  • those worried about their own sexual thoughts or behaviour towards children, including those with concerns about their online behaviour
  • friends and relatives of people arrested for sexual offending, including internet offending
  • any other adult with a concern about child sexual abuse – including survivors and professionals

We believe that child sexual abuse is preventable, not inevitable, and urge abusers and potential abusers to seek help. By working together we can prevent child sexual abuse.

Stop! Helpline missing four times the number of calls it is taking

The Stop it Now! Helpline, which offers confidential advice, information and support to UK adults concerned about sexual abuse, is ‘missing’ an average of 2200 calls a month, over and above the 500 a month currently answered.

The figures are revealed as initial findings from an independent evaluation of the Stop it Now! Helpline are published (Thursday, May 15). The research, which also looks at Stop it Now! UK and Ireland’s sister Helpline in Holland, has been led by NatCen Social Research and aimed to assess the contribution such sexual abuse prevention Helplines make to keeping children safe. Its findings reveal the importance of providing anonymous support and advice to help prevent child sexual abuse, including online harm such as sexual grooming and accessing indecent images of children. 1 in 6 children experience some form of sexual abuse in their childhood – but only a small proportion of offences get reported.

Sustained media coverage of high profile child sexual abuse cases demonstrate that sexual abuse can happen anywhere – without anyone noticing the signs. It is also common for those with concerns to not know where to go for help.

Stop it Now! provides a safe place for people to talk about their concerns and worries. This may be someone worried about someone they know or someone worried about their own thoughts.

Our Helpline resources are not able to meet demand. We miss around 2000 calls a month as we do not have the capacity to answer them. Please support our work by making a financial contribution.
