Is it illegal to be a paedophile?

It is important to distinguish between sexual preference and sexual behaviour. Having a sexual preference for children (paedophilia) is not in itself illegal.

It is acting on the interest which constitutes an offence. As the law has changed over the years, particularly to incorporate the Internet and the use of new technologies, it is important to be aware of the law as it applies to sexual offences within your jurisdiction.

The next section is not intended as a comprehensive description of the law as it applies in the UK; rather it highlights a range of examples of behaviour, online and offline, which constitute sexual offences.
